Baking holiday treats doesn’t mean that you have to end up with sugar cravings for days, a stomach ache, and extra inflammation.  You can make holiday cookies and treats with whole food ingredients and a lot LESS sugar!


Paleo/Grain Free Does NOT Equal Calorie Or Sugar Free

Please keep in mind as you go through this holiday season that just because something is Paleo or Grain free, does not mean you can EAT AS MUCH AS YOU WANT.  While these “treats” are free of gluten, dairy, and soy, they still contain sugar and plenty of calories.



You still want the bulk of your supportive nutrition plan to be made up of protein, vegetables, and healthy fats even during the holidays.

Cookies that are grain free and made with real food ingredients are better for several reasons…

  • More satisfying due to higher fat content so you eat 1 cookie versus 4-5.
  • Do not contain gluten, which can increase inflammation and contribute to symptoms such as depression, anxiety, headaches, digestive upset, joint pain, and the list goes on and on.
  • Lower in carbohydrates because they lack grains helping to minimize the spike of blood sugar.

Remember not all calories are created equal…

Be Mindful

When you are searching for recipes, be mindful of the ingredients, mainly how much sugar it calls for.  Most of the time you can reduce the sugar in a recipe and it will still taste great!


For example, if a recipe calls for dark chocolate chips plus ½ cup of raw honey or maple syrup,  reduce the sweetener down to ¼ cup, as the chocolate chips contain sugar as well.  


Too much sugar can make me pretty moody, unmotivated, cause cravings, and disrupt my sleep so I have to be very mindful about how much sugar I consume or I’ll suffer the consequences. Maybe you’ve felt this way but you’ve never connected the dots – pay attention to see how you feel after over doing it on sweets and treats.


Also, be mindful of how much nut flour and nut butter you are consuming this time of year.  The calories can add up fast and for some individuals, nuts can increase inflammation and exacerbate symptoms, especially those that are autoimmune in nature.

The holidays can be very busy with a to-do list a mile long.  Often times we are putting food in our mouth unconsciously simply because it is there or we are stressed.  I encourage you to indulge in those things that are truly WORTH IT to you and pass on other less desirable things.  If you take a bite of something and it doesn’t taste AMAZING to you, then STOP EATING IT!!!  It is ok to give yourself permission to do that.  You can politely decline foods without offending anyone.
