Is fat really good for weight loss?
Yes, however, you can have too much of a good thing.
Fat is an essential nutrient. We need it in our diets for energy, to absorb vitamins, to make cell walls, and build the sheaths around our nerves.
Have you ever gone on a fat-free diet? I did..way back in the early 90’s. I felt terrible. Tired, cranky, and, well, mostly really cranky, because I didn’t go fat-free for long enough that my hair fell out, but my nails were really, really weak.
Specific to weight loss, however, fat can be that “too much of a good thing” nutrient.
We all need fat. Some people have more success with less fat, some people have success with more fat.
Unfortunately for me, I’m one of those people who can lose weight with “less fat” in my diet. I have clients who lose weight easier and feel better when they get more fat.
My suggestion to you would be to:
- Work with an R.D. or nutrition coach who can track your progress and who gives you a specific meal plan, or
- Try different ways of eating and see what works.
If you go the “try different ways of eating” route, then you really have to go the No Cheat for the entire test. For one week, add a serving of fat to all of your meals and snacks. At the end, review: did you lose body fat? Did you feel energetic? Did you have mental clarity?
Next try adding ONE serving of fat at major meals (you might even skip the morning meal). At the end, review: did you lose body fat? Did you feel energetic? Did you have mental clarity?
So, is fat really good for weight loss. Yes, if you eat it according to your body type and don’t OVER-EAT it. :)
