Getting over the “getting started” hump

I bet you’ve experienced a lazy weekend morning when the weather was perfect for going outside to do some gardening, go for  walk or even to get some long overdo backyard chores completed but you were so tired from a long week that you spent half the morning on the sofa just chilling out. Even though it was really beautiful outside, you stayed in…until you didn’t.

It took some time, but you finally got moving and not long after, you thought to yourself,  “Gee, I wish I had gotten outside earlier. It’s so nice outside!”

You just needed to get past that moment of ‘starting’. Who knew the hardest part was just getting started?

It’s the same with so many things in our lives, including fitness.

Perhaps you’ve made the decision that you  really do need to exercise regularly. You know it’s good for longevity and you know it will improve the quality of your life and you’ll feel so much better when it’s a routine, but still, something is holding you back from starting.

That hump you have to get over might be your attitude and outlook.

Often people look at the downside of something they believe they “have to do.”

It’s gong to take up so much time, it cost money (perhaps), my muscles are going to hurt, I don’t know anyone…and the list goes on.

Instead of telling yourself all of the inconveniences  about exercise, you must remind yourself of the  benefits!

“If I workout, I will have more energy, I will strength my bones, I will be able to lift my children/grandchildren, kayaking/skiing/biking/hiking/etc. will be easier and more enjoyable, I’ll stand straighter, my joints won’t hurt, my back will feel better” and on and on.

This often helps me get over that “getting started hump” and I’m so happy be mindful enough to use this little trick. Try next time you start giving yourself an excuse not to exercise!
