Bigger

The other day I was working out and a woman saw me writing down my workout so we ended up in a conversation, of course ;)

She was 50 years old and concerned because she was getting bigger in spite of all of the regular exercise she was doing.

I told her to lift weights and she proceeded to tell me me that she didn’t want any more muscle for fear of becoming bigger.

Whoa! Right then, I realized women still don’t understand the importance of lifting weights/doing resistance training.

This woman came several times a week and would do cardio and then some exercises that she would see other people do. It’s no wonder she didn’t get the results she was looking for. Cardio heavy, random exercises….

I get it, though, because it’s extremely overwhelming to try and figure out what exercises to do, what is the right thing to do for your body, how much, how often, etc.

I explained all of the benefits of having muscles (improves overall health & longevity; remaining independent in old old age;  decrease risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes and depression) and also explained how muscle takes up less space, hence she will look smaller, plus that it is  harder to build when you are 50 (really 40) and older, but still possible but that  you have to  change your diet as well as exercise properly.

Hopefully, she will take my advice and change to a muscle building program, for her health and for her goals.
