You already know exercise matters. That’s not the issue. The real challenge is getting started—and…
This DROPS when you lose weight
Weight loss seems to be harder now that you are not in your 20s or 30s.
You used to be able to cut out breakfast and drop 5#, but that doesn’t work anymore.
Weight loss is not linear, either. On paper it looks good to say one pound of fat is 3500 calories, eat 500 calories less per day and by the end of each week I should drop one pound. Unfortunately, it never works like that.
Here’s the deal: while the loss is not linear and it plateaus, it is expected and it’s good to know this in advance and to know one reason it happens.
You need to be in a caloric deficit to lose body weight, but at some point, your body starts to fight you on this. It really likes to hold on to its fat stores so when you start tapping into those stores of energy we call fat, your body puts on the breaks.
It says “Hold up! I’m losing energy and have to conserve so I’m going to slow down my energy use.”
The body does this under the principle of N.E.A.T = non-exercise activity thermogenesis and NEAT drops!
You actually stop excess, unconscious movement like fidgeting or talking with your hands.
One tip to outsmart your body is to count your steps when you start a caloric deficit and then make sure, as the weeks go on, that you are still taking that many steps a day.
If you notice a drop, you’ll know what’s going on and you can say to yourself “Self, I have to get up and move even if I don’t feel like it” because you have a goal and your goal doesn’t care how you feel.
