If you’re lucky enough to get old

If you are lucky enough to get old, is frailty a guaranteed byproduct?

Frailty is most often associated with age, disuse and disease.

I’ll admit that I do believe It’s nearly inevitable to have aches and pains as you get older (a.k.a. now), but frailty is different. It’s weakness to the point of not being able to sufficiently protect yourself from the simplicities of every day life.

It means you trip because you can’t lift your foot high enough over a door jam or a little lift of the edge of a carpet or a cat rubbing up against your leg could mean disaster. It means you can’t walk throughout your house or across your back yard because you’re out of breath. Forget the stairs, frail people don’t climb stairs.

Maybe you can’t see yourself ever being like this, but the nursing homes are filled with people, especially women, who are exactly like that.

If that’s true, if frailty means devastating weakness, loss of balance and disease, then “No, frailty is not a guaranteed byproduct of getting old” because you can prevent that! (whew, finally some good news!)

The truth is, you can start progressive resistance training now for the benefit of your future self. The best time to start may have been in your teens, but the next best time to start is now.

It’s well known that people in their 80s and 90s can increase strength and muscle size, but for the biggest impact on the quality of your life, start weekly exercising now and you must include resistance training.

Your doctor has probably told you “start exercising,” but what do you do with that if you haven’t a clue about where to start. In fairness, your doctor likely doesn’t know where to start either and that’s probably why he/she said “start with walking.”

If you read my email last week, you’ll know that walking is great, but it’s not enough. It’s not enough to keep or build your muscle, muscle that is necessary for reducing slips and falls, protects you from diabetes and helps your brain stay mentally alert.

You likely think ahead for your family, your vacations and your retirement and you have to think ahead for your health and quality of life, too.

If you want to be surrounded by women who support you, challenge you, and remind you of how capable you really are, I have openings available during our morning sessions.

This Fall, I’ll have ONE opening for a client who is interested in one-to-one, individualized training. If you are interested in more information, reply back with 1-1 in the subject line.
