Middle School is a great age to get girls active and lifting weights!
They face a lot of pressure and I believe girls will benefit from being involved in a program that teaches them not only the foundations of movement skills and strength, but respect for others, self-respect, confidence in their strength and general self-confidence(if you can lift heavy stuff, if you can do push-ups ,etc. it gives you a great feeling of confidence in other areas of your life).
Your daughter will learn proper form and technique when performing body weight exercises and exercises using band, dumbbells and kettlebells and other fitness and exercise related equipment. I do not have barbells or squat racks so we will not be using them. The girls can learn that in high school program.
I will teach them many exercises that they will do in high school and beyond. Strength training is for everyone and the skills they learn this summer will last them a life-time.
Interestingly, this past weekend I went to a continuing education day and one of the speakers was specifically talking about his research in pediatric strength and conditioning.
Here are some highlights:
- Young girls who strength train have stronger bones in adulthood than those who don’t train
- Students in who strength train have better academic scores than those who don’t
- Stronger kids move more often, play more sports and are less likely to suffer injuries
- Strength is essential component to motor development
- There is a rise in pediatric dynapenia (which used to be seen only in older adults is now being seen in children, is the loss of muscular strength not caused by neurological or muscular disease that typically is associated with older adults.
Needless to say, children need to strength train because telling them to go outside and play isn’t working (it’s like telling an an illiterate person to go to the library and read.)
I also intend to teach the girls basic nutritional principles (whole foods, why to avoid junk/highly processed foods), drink water, etc., too.
And…have fun through movement.
If you have more questions about me or the class, please do not hesitate to ask.
