How to make habits last forever

Have you ever made a decision to to something or change something about your life and you go ALL IN?

It’s non-stop, do everything NOW, get it right, do ALL the moving parts TODAY and then, whew…you get burnt out and just go back to your old ways.

I sure have. …and I felt like I let myself down. But, I really just wanted to make my new habits just that…new habits that would last forever.

In reality, I  went about it the wrong way. I should have taken things slower so I could incorporate the changes into my life without giving everything else up.

When you decide that you are going to Get Healthy and suddenly change the way you eat, exercise 5 times per week, go to bed at 9 p.m.,  start mediating, drink more water, cut out wine and coffee, ….I bet your shoulders are up to your ears with tension just reading this – it’s too much at once for most people to sustain.

It works temporarily and some things may even stick, but something else probably suffered big time because you had to get the time from somewhere to do all those new things.

You don’t have to be perfect at EVERYTHING. You don’t have to make ALL of the changes today. One step at a time will get you there.

So try one or a just a couple of things:

  • Exercise 3 times a week
  • Drink 2 extra cups of water per day
  • Go to bed 15 minutes earlier than normal
  • Wake up at the same time, even on weekends
  • Start your morning with a positive phrase
  • Stretch for 15 minutes
  • Take a real lunch break (and not shovel the food in while you are still typing a way)
  • Prep 2 dinners per week instead of going from zero to 5.
